The Virgin’s Child

Born of a maiden so humble, so fair
(Her hair always covered, eyes lowered in prayer;
Espoused to old Joseph, but promised to God ),
She, though a virgin, conceived from above.

Announced by an angel, explained in a dream,
The child of this virgin blessed John from within;
Adorned with a star, adored from afar was
A child in a manger born King of kings.

Sung by a choir sent from high heaven,
Seen by poor shepherds driven by visions;
Born of the virgin en route to a census, then
Fleeing to Egypt, was God’s own Son, Jesus.
